SO LONG, MAY

Poet's Garden

Fine.

Be that way.

O very, merry month of May.

June’s right behind you.

Just waiting.

So go ahead.

Leave.

Not that anybody could stop you.

You sure didn’t last long.

In fact, you sped right by.

Or so it seems.

But you packed a wallop while you were here.

You brought rain.

And wind.

Thunder and lightning.

Hail.

Tons of wildflowers.

And 90-degree days.

You brought a ton of pollen too.

And allergies.

Asthma.

Pneumonia.

Bronchitis.

Nothing very merry about that.

Still, a month has to do what a month has to do.

You brought Mother’s Day.

And Memorial Day.

You brought the school year to a close.

And closure to some lives.

But you also brought new life.

Trees leafed.

Plants sprouted.

Bulbs bloomed.

Cows calved.

Babies were born.

Miracles happened.

And now everything that sticks, stings, or bites has arrived.

Snakes included.

They’re heeeeeeere.

And there.

And everywhere.

Even where you least expect ‘em.

So watch your step.

As for May, it’s outta here.

Talk about hit-and-run.

Maybe June will make us swoon.

Instead of swelter.

And carry on the cooler tune.

At least for awhile.

At least until it’s officially Summer.

Wouldn’t that be cool?

That’s Mason.
